Fran and I took an early train to Hallstatt. We spent a good part of the trip on a slow regional train that wound its way through the mountains. Most of the time, we were standing with our heads out the window admiring the scenery. To get to Hallstatt from the train, you have to take a ferry across the lake.

The view from the train.

Hallstatt's central square.

Hallstatt was an absolutely beautiful town. It's sandwiched between a mountain and a lake with nothing but gorgeous views all around. The best thing about Hallstat? No tourists!

This was the view from the balcony at the pension.

'Nuff said.

The only people around were locals.

The intrepid traveler prepares himself for the day's hike.

We did another ice cave tour, although it wasn't nearly as impressive as the one near Salzburg.

"Yep, those sure are clouds."

Using his eerily innate sense of direction, our traveling hero points to the top of the mountain.

We found this snow field at the top of the mountain that hadn't melted yet. Using the plastic bag that held our lunch as a toboggan, we zipped down the hill.

"Lasko makes a quick start out of the gate"

"Oh oh! He looks to be out of control!"

"Get the cameraman out of the way!!! He's on a death plunge!!!"

"The hills are alive with the sound of..."

We befriended a puppy while drinking beer on a deserted mountaintop patio.

"Bad dog! Give me back my fingers!"

Heliskiing anyone???

I was having such a good time in Hallstatt that I didn't want to leave. However, I did have a plane to catch the next day. I didn't have a full schedule and had no idea if I could even make my plane in time. I wasn't all that concerned though. If I missed my plane, then I'd be forced to hang around Europe even longer.

Sigh. On the train to Frankfurt to catch a plane home...
