The last room in the house on my renovation list. After the success of my previous tiling jobs that started at the front entrance, then the kitchen backsplash, I decided to tackle the mother of all tiling jobs (at least for me) and did the bathroom. As with my other renovation jobs, I did everything myself (well, my dad did help with some plumbing). Even the colour scheme and decorating was done without any female help!

Whoever thought that puke green looked good must have been smoking some really good weed. Then again, the house WAS built in the early 70's, so who knows? I hope somebody doesn't say the same thing about my decorating choices some 20-30 years down the road. This picture was taken before I moved into the house in 1999. The awful green fixtures were complemented nicely by matching wallpaper. I lived with this for 5 years before I decided to finally do something about it. |
I started ripping out the tile around the old tub on December 2, 2004. My dad the plumber helped out the first weekend with installing the tub and fixing some other plumbing issues. The first phase of the project (installing the tub and toilet and tiling the tub and floor) took about a week to get done. The counter and cabinets took much longer than I anticipated to arrive, so I had a half-finished bathroom for most of January. I used that time to redo the electrical wiring and install a ceiling fan (which involved a lot of wriggling through crawlspaces and attics).
The counter and cabinets came in early February and with a flurry of activity, I got everything finished by mid-February.

Dad has an inability to actually look at a camera. I obviously didn't inherit that trait. |
The tub and concrete board installed. |

Installing the shower plumbing. |
Looks like going to the bathroom will take some creative aiming for a while. |
Not bad on the tiling job, but something is missing. I couldn't install the toilet until the tiling was done. That lit a fire under my ass. |

I ran out of tile glue before I could finish the tub. I decided to wait for the counter before I finished it off. |
A nice new throne! The counter and cabinets didn't come in for at least a month, so the project went on hold until then. |
The counter and sink installed, the tiling finished, and the paint slapped on. It's coming together! |

Tub and toilet before the installation of the shower door. |
The finished bathroom. I now spend waaaay too much time in the shower. It's just too nice! I'm very happy with how it all turned out. Maybe I should quit my computer consulting job and become a professional renovator. If anybody wants me to do a renovation for them, just get a hold of me! :)
